Keeping your microwave clean can prove to be a difficult task, especially if you live with roommates. It’s always the last cleaning chore anyone wants to tackle because it’s a time consuming and smelly task that can sometimes require some real scrubbing to get it sparkling clean again. Everyone knows that the easiest way to keep your microwave clean is to wipe it out after every use, but chances are, since you’re using the microwave, you’re in a hurry and don’t have the time to clean it every time you use it. For an easy and quick cleaning, here’s how to tackle that dirty microwave:
Steam Cleaning Your Microwave
The traditional method of cleaning out your microwave involves some disinfectant wipes or a scrubbing sponge with some hot, soapy water. Steam cleaning your microwave is a new way to tackle that dirty microwave. All you need is one lemon, a microwave-safe bowl, and some tap water.
- To start your process, wipe out and loose crumbs that can be easily removed from your microwave
- Next, fill a microwave-safe bowl with ¾ of tap water. Add 5 to 10 slices of lemon, squeezing some of the juice into the water
- Put the bowl in the microwave, set on high, and turn it on for 5 minutes. Check it every few minutes to see when the water begins to boil
- When the water comes to a boil, stop the microwave and let the bowl sit inside to create steam. Let the steam build for about 2 minutes before carefully removing the hot bowl
- Remove the tray and wash it in the sink. Dish soap may be required to remove any baked spillage.
- Wipe down your microwave with a damp cloth. Follow up with a dry towel to remove any streaks. Return the tray
- Wipe down the exterior of your microwave with your choice of a damp cloth or a disinfectant wipe. Remember to get that keypad!
When to Tackle Your Dirty Microwave
When it comes to cleaning your kitchen, you probably do that once every two weeks if there’s not a lot of spillage, or you do it once a week if your kitchen is used a lot. When it comes to your microwave, however, it’s best to wipe it out after every use that results in spillage. Even if you’re in a hurry, take a quick swipe at it. You’ll thank yourself later when you don’t have to deal with encrusted food. If you don’t have the time to wipe your microwave after every use, steam cleaning is a simple process that should be done every week.
