Cleaning your baseboards can definitely be a task that you know you need to do, but one that falls low on your priority list. It’s often something that’s neglected on a regular basis, then dust gathers and the task becomes much harder and time consuming than it needs to be. Since we at HouseMaids clean the baseboards on each cleaning visit, we know the baseboard cleaning tips and tricks of the trade.
One at a Time
The thought of getting on your hands and knees to clean the perimeter of every room in your house seems daunting, we know. As this does not need to be done as regularly as other cleaning chores, try to tackle one room each time you break out the cleaning supplies. Then make the baseboards the last chore of your cleaning checklist, since other house cleaning can add dust to the baseboards.
Start by dusting. Use a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment, a broom or even a new paintbrush to sweep along the tops of the baseboards, removing the dust. If you haven’t touched the baseboards in a while, you may need to repeat the process a few times. Then wipe down the baseboards with a cloth rag and a simple solution of warm water and dish soap (NOT dishwasher detergent). Make sure the cloth is just damp, not soaking wet as you don’t want to induce moisture build up. Use cotton swabs dipped in the cleaning solution for hard to reach corners. Note that if your baseboards are stained wood, you may need to use a wood cleaner. Now protect your bright and shiny baseboards! Rub a dryer sheet along the boards; the anti-static properties repel dust.
