What to Do
Vacuum regularly. This one may seem obvious, but vacuuming is your first line of defense in keeping your carpet clean, and the first step in any carpet cleaning endeavor – whether regular cleaning or stain removal. Then get help moving as much furniture out of the way as possible. This allows for the most effective cleaning while not having to worry about damaging furniture in the process, especially wood furniture.
Once the floor is free of furniture and debris, choose a carpet cleaner, or make your own, and test it in a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it does not change the color of your carpet or harm the fibers. Then apply to the entire treatment area. Be sure to get the carpeted areas dry within 24 hours to keep mold from growing.
What Not to Do
Just as important as the carpet cleaning tips to follow are those things NOT to do! For example, don’t wait for the stain to set in – clean it right away to give yourself the best odds in getting the stain up. Don’t scrub the stain, as you could just push the dirt further into the fibers. When cleaning your carpet and stains, only blot with a clean, white cloth. A colored cloth may transfer that color to your carpet. Don’t oversaturate the areas, and don’t forget to rinse the cleaning solution after you apply it. Unrinsed areas will be sticky with residue and attract more dirt.
