It’s a New Year and maybe a new clutter-free home if you know how to sort it out. Straighten up your clutter before going in for a deep New Year’s clean. Once you get things organized, we can tackle all of the nooks and crannies around your house.
Keep
The first pile you want to establish when sorting clutter is your keep pile. These are things that you want, need, and have an actual use for. There are a few ways of discerning what belongs in the keep pile. Though it might be hard to throw things away, if they don’t fit in any of the categories, there is no point in keeping them.
Closet Hanger Trick
The closet hanger trick needs to be implemented ahead of time to be useful. At the beginning of the year, turn all of your hangers one way. Then, each time you wear an item put it back in the closet with the hanger turned the other way. At the end of the year, donate or throw away anything with the hanger still turned around.
Apply this “if I haven’t used it in a year” mentality to home goods, tools and electronics as well. If you haven’t needed it this year, you probably never will.
Do You Have Use for It?
Ask yourself, “Do I have a use for this?” Some things, like a set of drill bits, might not get used frequently. However, they are expensive to replace when you need them. Mindfully keep these with their purpose considered.
Throw Away
Things that need to be thrown away are items that are broken, obsolete, dirty, and worn out. Recycle what you can. Many things like electronics and construction materials can find new uses with the right recycling program.
Donate/Sell
Donating can feel really great. Giving away a perfectly good bed frame you just don’t have use for anymore feels good when you know it’s going to a refugee family that just arrived with nothing or a single mom starting out on her own. Let go of things that can help others.
Choose an option for selling that immediately gets the items out of your home. When you are committed to decluttering, waiting six months for things to sell on eBay is not practical.
Bring clothes, jewelry, shoes, and handbags to a consignment shop. They’ll take them right away and send you a check when they sell. Pawnshops are useful too.
