Spring has sprung ladies and gentlemen! And though the weather isn’t as extreme here as is it in the northern climes, the next few months are still a great time to throw open the windows, move the furniture around, and give your house the proverbial spring cleaning it needs.
Though you may have made it outside more often than not over the course of the last four months, most of the country was cooped up inside for the better part of sixteen weeks; not able to venture out – or at the least not wanting to – due to extreme cold and inclement weather. With the arrival of more fifty-degree temperatures (or perhaps 70-degree temperatures here in Florida), the time has come to at least start thinking about the yearly cleaning task.
Whether you’re here or there, spring house cleaning can be a monumental task! Moving furniture, wiping down all surfaces, washing, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, polishing…the list goes on and on. Fortunately for you, HouseMaids is here to help. We offer home or office cleaning services that range from the simple to the complex and everything in between. We can make the chore of spring house cleaning into the vacation you’ve always dreamed of.
Below are some tips for making your spring house cleaning a success.
1) Tackle one room at a time.
This is especially important if your schedule only allows a small amount of time to dedicate to the task. It also makes a big job seem easier if you break it up into smaller tasks.
2) Wipe down/clean all the furniture in that room first.
Vacuum upholstered chairs, sofas, and loveseats. With a damp rag, wipe down solid furniture such as book cases, end tables, coffee tables, and the like. Don’t forget your TV, entertainment center, VCR, DVD player, and all other electronic gear. These items especially will appreciate a once-yearly cleaning as their internals can easily become fouled with the dust that accumulates over the course of a year.
3) Remove the newly cleaned furniture from the room and tackle the empty space.
Sometimes it’s not possible to remove all the furniture from a room but when it is, it makes the job of spring house cleaning so much easier. Now, instead of being faced with a lot of nooks and crannies, you’re faced with a square (or cube if you want to be technical) and straight lines that work well with vacuum cleaners. Start from the top and work your way down. Knock down cobwebs with a broom. Brush or wipe down walls. Wash windows. And finally, vacuum the carpets or sweep and mop the floors, whichever is applicable.
4) Move furniture back in.
Move the newly cleaned furniture into the newly cleaned room perhaps rearranging the layout or trying something new altogether.
5) Take the opportunity to get rid of things while you’re at it.
Since everything is already moved out anyway, why not go through your clothes and any other belongings that were in that room to find things to sell or donate. Spring is also a great time to simplify and de-clutter.
6) Move on to the next room.
Repeat the above process as necessary until all rooms have been cleaned.
7) Kitchens as special circumstances.
Spring house cleaning is a great time to take everything out of the cabinets and drawers to be sorted, simplified, and set aside for use, sale, or donation. Work on one cabinet or drawer at a time. Remove items. Clean cabinet or drawer. Sort items and replace. Move on to next drawer or cabinet.
Once that’s complete, consider moving the refrigerator and stove. Clean under and around those items – don’t forget the items themselves – before moving on to other areas of the kitchen. Now, just like with the other rooms, start from the top and work your way down. Wipe down the outsides of the cabinets and counters. Sweep and mop floors and you’re done!
