Who Needs A Cleaning Service?
My childhood and adolescence was fairly typical as these things go: dad worked, mom worked, my sister and I both swam on the high school swim team. That wasn’t all we did of course but it did serve to fill our days from beginning to end.
Most days my sister and I would get up at 5 a.m. in order to get to early-morning practice by 6. Practice would last until 7:30 and then school would start at 8 with classes until 3:30 and then another two hours of swimming from 4 to 6. Then it was home for dinner and homework.
Mom and dad both worked 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. When they got home every evening, the usual activities commenced: dinner, helping us with our homework, paying bills, etc. After all this was finished, the only thing anyone had any energy to do was fall into bed and go to sleep in order to get up and do it all again the next day.
Add in swim meets on the weekends and you’re looking at a pretty hectic schedule. When a schedule of this complexity is present, priorities must be set and, inevitably, less important activities necessarily fall by the wayside. For my family, two of those things were mowing the lawn and cleaning the house.
The lawn was no problem; we hired a neighbor boy to mow the small plot of grass every now and then when nature dictated…fairly typical. For cleaning the house, we had to go a bit atypical; we hired a cleaning service which, for all intents and purposes, meant that we “had a maid.”
When you say it like that, it automatically conjures up visions of stately English estates with butlers and cooks and maids. But our small, three-bedroom house in a small mid-western town was about as far from a stately English estate as you can get.
And it wasn’t like we were chronic hoarders or anything. We vacuumed the carpets every now and then and tidied up the kitchen and bathrooms when there was a need. But my parents saw the importance of keeping a clean house so every two weeks, someone would come over and spend a few hours giving the house a thorough cleaning. Cobwebs would be pulled down from corners, baseboards would be wiped, furniture would be dusted, carpets would be vacuumed, hard floors would be broomed, windows would be washed, bathrooms would be scrubbed, and the kitchen would be disinfected and mopped.
So it wasn’t like we had a servant cooking and shopping and serving us scones and marmalade in bed every morning. When you think about it, no one looks at you funny if you tell them you hire someone to mow you lawn for you. Tell them you hire someone to clean your house and you might get a raised eyebrow or two. But really, there’s very little difference between hiring a yard-care service and a home cleaning service; they both help to alleviate the push and pull of the hectic schedules that seem to be the norm these days.
So, who needs a cleaning service? Anyone and everyone. Time is one of our most precious (and fleeting) commodities so if we can spend a bit of money to buy ourselves a bit more time with our families and loved ones, that would be money well-spent.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of your daily life and finding it hard to keep up, consider hiring a cleaning service to reduce your workload. Most cleaning services offer flexible schedules ranging from one-time cleanings to weekly or even daily visits.
