Summer often means that you’ll be having friends or family members over for an extended visit. If that’s the case, you’ll want to make sure your home is in order before they arrive so that their stay with you will be as pleasant as possible. Here is an informal checklist
you can use to guide you in this process:
Start by cleaning your guest bedroom from top to bottom. Dust ceiling fans and take down blinds for a thorough washing. Dust all your furniture and accessories and add a fresh coat of furniture polish to wooden surfaces.
Remove all bed linens and wash them in hot water. While they’re being laundered, vacuum your mattress to remove any allergens that have accumulated since you last cleaned. If the room is especially dusty, you may want to steam clean the mattress instead. Give your pillows a thorough beating outdoors to release any dust and dust mites from them before you place new pillowcases on them.
Your bathroom should also be sparkling clean, so scrub it from top to bottom. Now is the time to scrub your bathroom trash can as well. Make sure the top of your medicine chest is wiped down so as to remove any dust. Scrub your baseboards, tub, shower walls, toilet and sink carefully as well. Use an old toothbrush to get rid of any gunk that has built up around your faucet, and soak your showerhead in white vinegar in order to remove lime buildup.
Your kitchen should be fresh and inviting since you and your guests will probably spend a great deal of time there. Scrub the outside of all your appliances until they shine, and thoroughly clean all counters. Wash down the fronts of your cabinets if they show signs of grease or grime on them. Make sure your refrigerator looks and smells fresh by washing all your shelves and replacing everything back inside neatly. If you notice unusual odors, use a bit of vanilla extract to help mask them.
