New Apartment Cleaning
Moving into a new home is an exciting prospect. There are so many things to do to prepare and you may have to make some new purchases or purge some existing belongings. One thing that is often overlooked is the pre-move in cleaning. You might assume your new apartment is clean – that either the landlord or previous tenant took care of it. While that may be the case, it could have been months ago or it may have been just clean enough to meet the move-out standards (which can be pretty low). Before you move in, it’s a great idea to take advantage of the clear space for a new apartment cleaning.
Four-Step Process
Cleaning will seem a lot easier and more efficient if you break it down into a simple, four-step process.
- Pick up and dust. Walk around the new apartment and pick up any debris or trash that may have been left behind. Then dust everywhere – windows, blinds, baseboards, appliances, cabinets, door frames, counters, lighting fixtures and air conditioner vents.
- This is a great opportunity to clean appliances and wipe down drawers and cabinets. You can even lay down liners to prevent future deep cleanings. Use disinfectant cleaners on the counters, exterior of the appliances and inside the refrigerator. Add a box of baking soda inside the refrigerator to ensure things stay odor-free as you start to use it.
- This is often the hardest and most dreaded place to clean. Scrub the shower and bathtub, making sure to rinse well so no one slips during its first use. Get in corners and grout, and try to tackle any mold or mildew stains now with a little bleach solution. You may consider installing an automatic shower cleaner to make future cleanings a bit easier. Disinfect the toilet handle, lid seat and bowl. Use a toilet brush to disinfect and scrub the bowl. Again, you can now install a tablet or gel or other constant toilet cleaner to keep things fresh longer. Wipe down counters, inside drawers and inside medicine cabinets. Clean mirrors and fixtures with a glass cleaner.
- Leaving floors as the last step ensures that any dirt and debris from previous steps that has landed on the floor now gets cleaned up. Sweep and vacuum first, especially in corners and in anticipated areas that may be covered by furniture later. Mop hard floors and get in the elusive corners.
Simple Stash
There are a few key cleaning products and pieces of equipment that you will need to keep on hand to make cleaning simple. Disinfecting wipes save a lot of time and thereby make it easier to just wipe things down quickly and frequently. A sweeper-mop makes cleaning floors – whether they are carpet, linoleum or tile – a breeze and done in one step. They also save space. A mini vacuum like a cordless two-in-one stick vacuum will help with quick cleanups virtually anywhere, including in a vehicle.
