Whenever you walk into a home, including your own, you notice that it has a very distinct smell. Just like people have their own smell that you associate with them, their homes will have a similar smell. Oftentimes those smells have a positive effect; you feel comfortable in that particular home. However, sometimes those home odors can be overtaken by unpleasant smells.
These unpleasant household odors can be due to animals, spoiled food, even dirty laundry that has piled up. How to tackle common home odors can be done with these four odor-busters:
Vinegar
Vinegar doesn’t smell the best itself, but it is a great agent to scrub those nasty smells and eliminate them. Not only does vinegar remove household odors, but it is an excellent cleaning agent. It is an antibacterial and a great mold killer. To tackle kitchen odors, like burnt or spoiled food, you can simmer some white vinegar in a pan for a couple minutes. This will cleanse the air of those foul food odors. You can also use vinegar to remove odors from drawers. Take a piece of white bread, put it in a bowl, and pour the vinegar over it. Put the bowl of bread and vinegar into the drawer and leave it there for about 24 hours.
Baking Soda
Everyone loves to use baking soda. As a versatile home product, baking soda has so many different uses and removing common household odors is one of them. Using baking soda is a great way to remove odors from inside the refrigerator, in clothing, carpets, and furniture. For example, to remove smells from furniture or carpet, combine baking soda with some lemon oil and sprinkle the mixture over the smelly area. Let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum the smell away.
Lemon
As mentioned above, lemon can be used mixed with baking soda to help remove odors, but it can also be used by itself to tackle household odors. You can remove odors by cutting lemons up into wedges and then boiling them in water. The lemony scent will drift throughout your home, clearing up the air. When you’re done boiling the water, you can then put the lemon water in spray bottles and directly spray the smelliest parts of your home. To dispose of the lemon rinds, you can grind them up in the garbage disposal which freshens those smells up as well.
Coffee Grounds
This odor-buster is less commonly known about, but using coffee grounds in a shallow container placed in your fridge or cupboards is a great way to remove odors. Something special about coffee grounds is that you can remove smoke smells from purses or bags by putting coffee grounds in a high sock and then leaving the sock inside the closed bag for a few days.
